General Counsel  Tennessee Board of Regents (Higher Education)

The Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) has retained Latitude on an exclusive basis to conduct a search for the TBR General Counsel. The General Counsel is the chief legal officer of the Tennessee Board of Regents system, supervises the Office of General Counsels staff (which includes 4 attorneys and a paralegal) and provides legal advice and guidance to both the Board and the Chancellor on matters impacting the entire TBR system. The TBR is the largest system of higher education in Tennessee, encompassing 40 community and technical colleges with 140,000 students enrolled each year.

This role requires outstanding leadership ability, sophisticated attorney practice experience, a high degree of responsiveness, the ability to work well with a variety of stakeholders, the ability to provide wise guidance to the Chancellor and Board (including in public meetings and responding to spontaneous questions), a helpful, collaborative, diplomatic and calm temperament, and the ability and willingness to personally perform complex legal work.

Requirements for the General Counsel:

  • Possess demonstrated professional stature, competence and confidence to operate with credibility at the executive level.
  • Demonstrated ability to rapidly prioritize and meet many conflicting demands while exhibiting integrity, diplomacy and sound judgment.
  • Significant and progressive legal leadership experience in the public and/or private sector.
  • Demonstrated ability to advise senior management on significant legal and/or policy issues.
  • Experience supervising attorneys.
  • Licensed and in good standing to practice law in Tennessee (or eligible to waive-in and practice in-house).
  • Ability to work collegially and effectively with a diverse group of constituents, including the Board of Regents, Chancellor, and Presidents, external groups, faculty, staff, and students and government agencies.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing proposed legislation and drafting policies.
  • Demonstrated, consistently high performance in prior roles.
  • Outstanding references.

Preferred (But Not Required) Experience:

  • Prior experience in higher education as an attorney or in a leadership role.
  • Experience working in a professional capacity with public agencies, including knowledge of public operations and familiarity with government regulatory compliance and oversight.
