About the Role

This role may be based in Chicago or San Francisco.

We work on complex and impactful
legal problems every day, and were looking for a versatile attorney to
help protect our growth stage business. This role will help develop and
drive processes for handling disputes and litigation in a manner that
aligns with our values. As
Litigation Counsel, you will lead our litigation and regulatory response
activities. Responsibilities include managing pre-litigation,
litigation, regulatory inquiries, and alternative dispute resolution for
a wide variety of customer-related disputes. You will gain a deep
understanding of Chimes products and act as the face of Chime,
resolving conflicts, setting strategic direction and shaping our
relationships with customers, regulators and other external


  • Lead
    potential litigation and internal investigations, respond to discovery
    requests; create and analyze demands and case plans, and negotiate and
    draft settlements
  • Manage a range of litigation and be capable of handling investigation issues involving government entities and regulators
  • Partner closely with peers on Chimes legal, risk and compliance teams
  • Proactively identify, analyze and mitigate legal risks
  • Devise scalable processes and procedures to ensure the litigation function scales with our business
  • Field and resolve legally sensitive complaints from Chimes customers
  • Supervise outside counsel
  • Advise on litigation, arbitration and conflict-resolution strategy
  • Work with
    internal stakeholders to address legal notices from regulatory bodies,
    courts and customers (including levies, liens, garnishments, subpoenas,
    court orders and search warrants)


  • J.D. degree and a state bar member in good standing
  • 7+ years of combined law firm, government and/or in-house experience
  • Familiarity
    and experience with the finance, payments, banking or
    financial-technology (fin-tech) industry and related legal issues,
    including the laws, rules and regulations related to banks, bank
    partners, and/or the participants in various payments systems, including
    processors and program managers
  • A team player who is willing to pitch in where needed in a fast-paced, growing company
  • Ability to be organized, detail-oriented, self-starting, resourceful, and flexible
  • Sound and practical business judgment, intellectual creativity, and problem-solving skills
  • Effective in developing positive relationships with internal partners (including senior company executives) and external stakeholder
  • Flexibility and desire to grow as Chimes legal needs evolve and expand
  • Strong
    familiarity with e-discovery issues, including document retention
    policies and procedures as well as collection, review, and production of
  • Excellent writing and advocacy skills
  • Strong organization and project management skills with the ability to work well on both long and short-term projects
  • California bar membership.
