Senior Counsel  Treasury Management

The Role:

The Capital One Legal Department is seeking an experienced attorney to provide support for its growing Commercial Bank business. The role will primarily support the Treasury Management (TM) line of business, which creates and manages a suite of treasury management products and services for our commercial customers.

The successful candidate must have strong legal and analysis skills, an ability to anticipate, discover and troubleshoot legal and business issues and the flexibility to simultaneously manage a wide range of projects.

Representative responsibilities include:

  • Support bankers across the Commercial Bank lines of business with legal issues relating to our treasury management products and services

  • Facilitate the development of new treasury management products and services to support the growth of our commercial deposits and other non-interest income opportunities and support business objectives

  • Closely coordinate with legal and compliance experts in differing regulatory disciplines

  • Manage outside legal counsel in an effective and efficient manner

  • Support the internal approval & new product introduction processes

  • Escalate issues, as appropriate, and partner collaboratively to identify issues and share potential concerns and ideas with other legal teams across the enterprise

  • Review internal and external marketing materials

  • Work with business units to develop new, and update existing, form documentation to address current market trends

  • React quickly to bank customer needs, including advising on customer facing matters to minimize risk

The successful candidate will have:

  • Excellent legal, analytical and document drafting skills and focused attention to detail

  • Demonstrable advocacy and oral and written communication skills, including the ability to interact successfully with all functions and levels of Bank associates

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly understand the business needs and partner with the business, other members of the Legal Department and other groups to create solutions and efficiently deliver team results

  • Ability and desire to understand, explore and solve complex issues

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and influencing skills

  • Ability to prioritize and support multiple initiatives

Basic Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor and member in good standing of at least one state bar

  • At least 5 years of law firm or in-house legal department experience relating to commercial banking, commercial finance, or financial services products

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 4 years of experience representing financial institutions in the treasury management area

  • Experience across a broad range of commercial banking treasury management products and services including payables, receivables and liquidity management

  • Knowledge of laws and regulations applicable to payment systems, cash management services and other commercial banking treasury management products and services

  • Familiarity with legal issues arising out of business email compromise/email account take-over and other fraud activity as it relates to treasury management products and services

  • Demonstrated ability to navigate across a large organization and work collaboratively with cross-functional teams

  • Able to work independently with guidance

  • Ability to manage multiple clients and projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
