The United States Attorney’s Office (USAO), District of Arizona, serves as the U.S. Government’s law firm for all aspects of litigation including the prosecution of federal crimes, recovery of fraudulently obtained government funds, civil fraud, collection and enforcement actions, and defending the U.S. Government’s interests in civil trial court matters and appeals. The USAO is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as an Assistant United States Attorney in its Phoenix office.


The work of the Civil Division mirrors the varied activities of the federal government and offers a challenging and diverse caseload. Civil Division AUSAs handle affirmative and defensive matters at both the trial and appellate levels. This position will be dedicated to affirmative financial litigation. The selected AUSA will work with investigators, agencies, AUSAs and others to identify and seize assets in connection with criminal and civil matters, and will use litigation tools (e.g., fraudulent transfer actions, discovery, attachment, garnishment) to expand recovery for victims and collect debts owed to the government. Flexibility and a willingness to learn new subject areas are valued traits for any applicant.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information.

Required Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 1* year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.

United States citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a J.D. degree and be an active member of the bar (any jurisdiction); be able to work well with client agencies and the public; possess superior oral and written advocacy skills; have strong character and interpersonal skills; have good judgment; and have demonstrated the capacity to function, with minimal guidance, in a highly demanding environment. It is desired that the successful candidate have at least one year of post-J.D. experience. Experience in financial litigation / collections is preferred but is not required if the applicant has a strong litigation background and is willing to master the subject area.
