Job overview and responsibilities

Responsibilities include providing direct and ongoing management of international matters, including research and preparation of necessary government filings, authorizations, approvals and other legal documents required for local operation in other countries, managing litigation in foreign jurisdictions, gathering and analyzing international info with international attorneys and other duties as assigned. Duties include supporting the Associate General Counsel  Regulatory, Alliances & International, Managing Counsel – Intern.

  • Supervisor for international outside counsel in 65 jurisdictions for the handling of day to day small claims and international regulation EU261-based cases
  • Receiving and translating of all cases into English, providing responses to lawsuits/claims, preparation for hearings, court appearances, and trials
  • Direct management of international customer care claims including research, gathering case information, attending meetings/phone discussions to provide settlement offers to passengers and opposing counsel
  • Preparation of settlement documentation for counsel to use in each jurisdiction
  • Completion of settlement payments, refunds, and travel certificates
  • Engage and manage outside counsel when warranted. This includes:
    • Weekly Legal/Customer Care meetings directly with Senior Attorney-International and Assistant Manager
    • Customer Care/Small Claims–Supervising intern
    • Outside counsel/has final responsibility for matter/settlement of claim
    • Manage/settle cases <10K independently
    • Support/manage directly outside local counsel worldwide with ultimate responsibility for matter, incl. litigation, arbitration, settlements, national enforcement body claims and consumer protection agencies
    • Manage and work directly with local both AO and Sales General Manager
  • Major litigation – coordinating with UA attorneys (Houston, Chicago and Brazil) when any type of new litigation is received and maintaining a international litigation docket for all matters types, including tax, administrative and employment/labor in all foreign jurisdictions
  • Day to Day handling of cases (insured and uninsured passenger claims, baggage claims and cargo claims) including management of outside counsel rates, fees, and settlement options, including preparation of cases brought into an arbitration or mediation board internationally
  • Carry out the companys records management initiatives by acting as the central coordinator for tracking of all international litigation records, including for the quarterly reserve meetings
  • Supporting the appropriate attorneys and internal resources with respect to creation and maintenance of the companys international litigation database
  • Providing direct and ongoing corporate management to the companys subsidiaries and international branches in 65 countries, maintaining the companys ability to do business in all these jurisdictions
  • Coordinating with finance and treasury, including research and preparation of necessary corporate branch filings, powers of attorneys, authorizations, annual reports, approvals and other legal documents required for local business operations in other countries
  • International corporate duties include:
    • Drafting, executing and filing documents directly with EVP, General Counsel and Secretary, EVP and CFO, and VP and Deputy General Counsel
    • Biweekly meeting and drafting, executing and filing documents directly with Managing Directors for International Finance and Accounting and team
    • Reviewing and preparing business license registrations in foreign jurisdictions, gathering and analyzing a wide range of information on international issues, insurance certificates, operational fines, police investigations, and information requests by local authorities
  • General international legal support duties/responsibilities include:
    • Supporting the Associate General Counsel, Regulatory, Alliances & International, Managing Counsel – International, Senior AttorneyInternational and other business partners, attorneys, and outside counsel in research, analysis, document preparation, and other duties assigned
    • Providing international experience in Emergency Response and Crisis incidents
    • Develop liaisons with international local stations to effectively respond to major emergencies and disasters and provide international support to ERT and others
    • Assisting company employees with international visa requirements and providing company letters for processing visas
    • Actively participating in a weekly calls to review pending items with key business partners Customer Care, the EU261 Executive Committee and Finance

Qualifications

Required

  • BS Degree
  • Airline expertise
  • Spanish and English fluency
  • Computer literate in all relevant programs
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
