The City of Redwood City invites you to apply for the position of Deputy City Attorney. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual with a solid legal background to play a key role in providing important services for our City and community. We are a relatively small office of five full-time lawyers, and strive for a collaborative working style that fosters harmonious relationships both within the office and among internal clients and members of the public. Assignments are dependent upon the needs of the office as determined by the City Attorney. Under general direction, the Deputy City Attorney provides a wide range of professional legal services to City departments, various boards and commissions, and City Council.
The ideal candidate will be organized and efficient, confident and concise in providing legal advice in the public arena; will embrace the Citys emphasis on excellent customer service; and will be a hands on and actively engaged team player who likes solving problems and working with a variety of City staff and the public. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented and able to manage multiple tasks, work fast, and learn quickly, and will use creative, sound, and independent judgment within general policy guidelines and law. He or she will be a skillful communicator who is able to remain tactful and diplomatic in stressful or sensitive situations. The ideal candidate understands the importance of ensuring the City Attorney is fully informed on all work and remains courteous but objective in client interactions.
Ideally, the candidate will have transactional experience. The candidate must also have strong oral and written communication skills, be a practical problem solver, have the ability to quickly and accurately conduct legal research, and work effectively independently and as part of a team. Experience in a municipal government setting is desirable; equivalent experience in the private sector will also be considered. Knowledge of and practical experience in the following areas is also a plus: telecommunications/ information technology, Brown Act, Public Records Act, conflicts of interest, finance and land use.
