Overview

Under general supervision, performs professional legal work for the State, its subdivisions, and officials. This position will focus primarily on non-capital murder direct appeal litigation and non-capital federal habeas actions. Will prepare briefs, pleadings, opinions and perform legal research. Will handle murder appeals to the SC Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, and federal habeas corpus litigation involving various South Carolina crimes in the federal court system. Will perform oral arguments with the state and federal trial and appellate courts on motions, hearings and appeals. May be required to provide assistance in capital cases, including capital case direct appeals, post-conviction relief, and appeals and/or other actions in the state and federal systems. Represents assigned State agencies as required by the Attorney General. Will perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Assistant Deputy Attorney General, Deputy Attorney General, Chief Deputy Attorney General, and/or Attorney General.
Prior appellate work experience preferred. Prior experience with the federal courts is favored but not required. Must be well organized with a demonstrated ability to work independently. Position will require overnight travel and occasional out of state travel. Must be able to transport files to and from court.
