Job Description

The Innovation Attorney Lead Consultant provides legal advice on intermediate level legal matters for the Innovation Law group and business clients. The employee in this job exhibits a strong understanding of core business processes and areas of emerging law, and supports matters across the enterprise relating to technology, cybersecurity, privacy, data management, international, and/or intellectual property.

Job Description
  • Provide advice and/or legal approval related to company documents, policy, practices, and procedures
  • Gather facts from client to understand goals and objectives client intends to achieve from intended action
  • Draft, review and / or negotiate basic matters and agreements
  • Perform due diligence
  • Research and determine applicable and pertinent laws, statutes, regulations, rules, and other legal authority
  • Proactively provide advice and counsel to business unit on the impact of new laws on business
  • Draft and/or review routine correspondence and communications
  • Monitor and review new laws, regulations, and case law, participating in relevant industry groups
  • Manage moderately-complex projects including development of meeting materials, and coordination with senior management
Job Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Juris doctorate
  • 5+ years related legal experience in a law firm or an in-house legal department for a mid- to large-sized company typical
  • Experience in the following areas: privacy, cybersecurity, technology, international, intellectual property, M&A, strategy, commercial, data, and/or highly regulated sectors
  • Experience operating within a parent company and its family of companies
  • Business and work experience outside legal context

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • License to practice law in Illinois (and/or other states as required)

Functional Skills

  • Fundamental knowledge of insurance products, distribution systems, and claims processes
  • Basic understanding of insurance accounting principles
  • Fundamental knowledge of the political nature of the regulatory environment and the litigious nature of insurance
  • Familiarity with FTC and NAD advertising standards
  • Computer skills, including MS Office suite, used in or related to the tasks performed
  • Ability to influence or persuade others
  • Project management skills
  • Ability to be discrete and maintain confidentiality with sensitive information
  • Business acumen with ability to quantify return on investments (create and contribute to business cases and risk evaluations)
