We are looking for an experienced and reliable Sr Legal Counsel to join our team! The Senior Legal Counsel will report to the Associate General Counsel. This candidate will work on a legal team that handles all service and construction contracting including contracting strategy and development/drafting, contract negotiations thru execution and including supporting the implementation of a contract by the applicable business unit. Contract implementation work entails working hand in hand with the business to provide real time contract analysis and opinions based on fact scenarios as the arise and management of all claims and disputes arising during the implementation of the contract including some litigation. This candidate will be a member of a team of inhouse lawyers who provide primary legal support to (i) Enbridge US and Canada Gas, Liquid, Utility and Power Pipeline Transmission and Midstream Operations and Projects Groups, and, (ii) Enbridges Supply Chain Management team and (ii) also occasionally provides legal support to various other business units at Enbridge with respect to Business Development (BD) projects and misc. service and construction contracting issues that arise. This position is located at Enbridges Houston office.

What You Will Do

  • Project Work – Provide legal support with structuring, drafting, reviewing, negotiating, interpreting and implementing contracts related to a variety of complex construction projects and associated medium to high risk service activities. Implementation work specifically includes working closely with the applicable business person/unit to understand the issues, applying factual scenarios to the contract and offering opinions and interpretations, preparing required contractual notices (indemnity, withholding, disputes, etc.) and assisting with formal responses to Contractor Changes Requests and Change Orders.

  • Construction transactional experience with drafting and implementing a wide array of complex construction contracts and varying commercial models.

  • Project execution experience and an understanding of how construction projects are developed and executed.

  • Provide legal support with structuring, drafting, reviewing, negotiating and interpreting contracts related to services needed to operate and maintain Enbridge assets.

  • Construction and commercial litigation experience. In the course of contract implementation, disputes between parties often arise. This candidate should have moderate to strong construction law and litigation experience to assist with all aspects of the management and resolution of complex disputes and some litigation.

  • Provide legal support with respect to research and updating contracts and advising internal clients on a variety of laws impacting construction and services contracting work.

  • Manage the use of external legal counsel on complex construction and other projects to ensure that they are providing services in an effective and cost-efficient manner in accordance with Enbridges Outside Counsel Billing and Staffing Guidelines.

  • Apply independent and sound judgment in recommending a course of action for an Enbridge company.

  • Other responsibilities may include the research, provision of critical legal advice or contribution to, and training in respect to approved contract templates and the concepts contained therein.

  • Ensure ownership of assignments and requires very little day-to-day guidance.

  • Ability to work patiently and collaboratively with all levels of business personnel of varying degrees of competency.

Who You Are

  • Law Degree from an accredited US law school.

  • A member in good standing with the Texas State Bar Association.

  • 10 or more years of legal construction law and litigation experience either in-house or at a major firm.

  • Highly developed ability to identify and respond professionally to legal commercial business issues on short notice, and under strict time constraints.

  • Ability to work independently, make decisions and meet multiple deadlines in a dynamic work environment; under tight deadlines.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively (cooperative yet persuasive approach) with all levels in the organization.

  • Excellent organizational, project management and facilitation skills.

  • Meticulous attention to detail, but pragmatic in approach.

  • Broad understanding of the North American energy industry.

Working Conditions:

  • High demand, fast-paced office environment.

  • Ability to travel to various offices of the Enbridge organization or counterparty locations, including internationally as required. This position requires an ability to handle a heavy workload and provide legal advice and support on very short timelines.

Physical Requirements (Office)

Grasping, kneeling, light  moderate lifting (objects up to 20 pounds), reaching above shoulder, repetitive motion, typing, sitting, standing, visual requirement (able to see screens, detect color coding, read fine print), hearing requirement and the ability to sit at a computer for long periods of time.
