The Position

The Senior Intellectual Property Counsel will serve as the primary Intellectual Property contact across the organization for the companys products and programs as well as working on a broad range of intellectual property matters helping to build and maintain a strong intellectual property portfolio. Reporting to the Companys General Counsel, the Senior Intellectual Property Counsel will work across multiple internal functional groups, as well as lead relationships with outside counsel.


  • Serve as in-house counsel for IP matters, directing legal work and overseeing the selection and engagement of outside legal experts when needed
  • Providing strategic input into all intellectual property matters
  • Identify scientific and technical discoveries for potential patent protection through regular communications with Broad Institute scientists
  • Oversee the preparation and prosecution of the Companys product and technology patent portfolio
  • Conducting freedom to operate analyses, identifying and mitigating any resulting risks
  • Advise senior management on intellectual property managers
  • Support alliance management efforts
  • Managing one or more patent agent(s)/attorney(s)


  • Strong technical/analytical skills with knowledge of intellectual property law, combined with a practical, business-oriented and strategic approach to identifying and solving business and legal problems
  • Self-motivated, assertive and self-confident with the ability to act with urgency and passion
  • Proven ability to work with a high level of integrity, accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong organizational skills in order to maintain a high level of productivity, innovation and priority-setting in order to complete assignments on-time and on-budget
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for effectively interfacing with all levels of management and departments within the company
  • Ability to make thoughtful, integrated, timely and meaningful decisions and take corresponding actions
  • Willingness to work collaboratively by incorporating diverse perspectives and appropriately managing relationships in order to strengthen decision-making
  • Proactively seek out and recommend process improvements


  • Experience in a law firm or as in-house council responsible for intellectual property
  • Experience in licensing, and supporting licensing negotiations, of life science technologies
  • Admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
  • D. from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA)
  • Advance degree (MS, PhD or Peng) in biochemistry, biological chemistry, biophysics, cellular biology, chemical biology, genetics, genomics, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, molecular pharmacology, neuroscience, organic chemistry, synthetic biology, systems biology, or virology, or biochemical engineering, bioengineering, biological engineering, biomedical engineering, or chemical engineering
  • Entrepreneurial, proactive, collaborative, self-starter and highly independent and able to work in a fast-paced environment
