Clearbit is looking for an experienced attorney to serve as the founding member of our in-house legal team and to lead Clearbit’s compliance and legal strategy. This is an incredibly crucial position for our company, and you will be responsible for providing strategic advice to the executive team, building and operating Clearbit’s legal department, and managing legal risk throughout the organization.

You will mentor and help other team members quickly grow and evolve professionally, while ensuring that enterprise risk is controlled and kept to a minimum.     • Advise the executive team on legal strategy and enterprise risk
    • Implement legal advice in the form of policies and procedures
    • Manage, advise on, and negotiate complex commercial transactions
    • Oversee the review and execution of a wide variety of agreements
    • Embrace the company culture, and work with stakeholders to enrich and protect our values of consciousness, inclusiveness, transparency, and compliance
    • Support all business operations in their compliance with applicable law
    • Stay engaged with recent developments of law relevant to Clearbit’s business
    • Select, oversee, and manage outside counsel in a cost-effective manner


    • J.D. from an ABA accredited law school
    • California bar admitted
    • At least 7 years as a practicing attorney with substantial experience in some combination of data privacy, corporate, technology transactions, and/or intellectual property law
    • Combination of “big law” firm experience and in-house (ideally at least 2 of those years as in-house counsel for a similar company in the data, business intelligence, or API spaces)
    • Direct experience providing startup founders and executives strategic and commercial legal advice and negotiating complex commercial transactions
    • Direct experience implementing and maintaining legal and regulatory compliance programs within mid-sized and large organizations (strongest preference for experience with data privacy and security regimes, such as GDPR or CCPA)
    • Prior management experience involving recruiting and directly managing top-tier legal talent
    • Direct experience managing outside counsel and legal spendEffective and precise communicator, able to translate complex issues into simple language that non-lawyers and non-experts can understand
    • Entrepreneurially-minded, able to understand tradeoffs of business and legal risk
    • High EQ — humble, curious, able to work cross-functionally with different personality types and manage through influence
    • Ability to work effectively with a remote team, without a drop-off in communication or influence
    • Unquestionable integrity and credibility
