Santander’s U.S. Legal and Corporate Affairs Department assists the bank in identifying, evaluating and mitigating legal and compliance risks.  As part of Santander’s Legal team, you will provide customized solutions and high quality, cost effective legal services to support Santander’s goals and objectives while ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.  This position is located in Boston, MA. 

The Employment attorney will provide advice and counseling to Human Resources clients (including Employee Relations) and business leaders on a wide range of legal matters, and serve as the primary day-to-day contact for employment and compliance issues. Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide advice on:
    • Recruiting, hiring, terminations, discrimination, and performance management issues
    • Wage and hour and other compensation issues
    • Disability accommodations
    • State and federal compliance (e.g., ADA, ADEA, Title VII, FMLA, FLSA, and WARN Act)
    • State and local leave and paid time off laws
  • Manage employment arbitrations, litigation, audits and investigations, including proceedings before administrative agencies (e.g., MCAD, EEOC)
  • Support resolution of attorney demand letters, and federal, state and local agency claims and charges
  • Assist Human Resources with the development of policies and procedures
  • Prepare and provide advice on employment agreements, including those containing restrictive covenants
  • Prepare and provide advice on separation agreements
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of industry-leading practices and trends
  • Provide educational information and training on employment matters


Candidates should have:
  • 6+ years of relevant employment law work experience
  • Experience with handling/litigating employment disputes
  • Strong interpersonal, decision-making and communication skills
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with other attorneys and Human Resources leaders and senior executives
  • Ability to work independently
  • J.D. from accredited law school and ability to practice law in Massachusetts
  • Experience with the banking industry, broker-dealer employment issues and/or Puerto Rico employment laws is a plus
