Summary

These positions are located on the George Washington/Jefferson National Forest in Virginia. The two duty locations are Blacksburg, VA and Harrisonburg, VA.

The incumbent leads a small marking crew performing a variety of timber sale preparation (TSP) duties that include-but not limited to-timber marking, timber cruising, and sale layout as part of the unit's timber management program.

Responsibilities

  • Mark or designate harvestable timber for appraisal of timber.
  • Lay out timber sale boundaries in accordance with environmental assessments and/or instructions for timber cutting.
  • Interpret silvicultural prescriptions and marking guides to designate harvestable timber.
  • Inform responsible individual of situations where prescriptions do not fit ground conditions for consistency with prescription.
  • Provide instruction to cruisers on measuring timber and cruise methods and techniques for appraisals.
  • Develop and draft cruise plans for estimating the amount of timber volume a forest contains.
  • Prepare written reports of all sale inspections and follow up on deficiencies to comply with contract provisions.
  • Lead employees by identifying, distributing, and balancing the workload and tasks in accordance with established workflow and skill level.
  • Establish work priorities to ensure timely accomplishment of assigned team tasks.
  • Instruct employees in specific tasks and job techniques and provides on the job training to new employees.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience Requirement:

For the GS-06: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience are: Provided support with tree measurements, map reading and compass use, species identification, defect recognition and determination, quality determination, traversing, use of aerial photos, and use of timber cruising tools and techniques; Interprets silvicultural prescriptions and timber marking guides to designate harvest timber; Measured amount and quantity of timber in designated timber sale areas; Applied instructions issued in a cruise plan. OR One full year (18 semester hours) of successfully completed graduate-level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position (courses in forestry, range management, or agriculture). OR a combination of graduate-level education and specialized experience that together meets the requirements of the position.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Applicants who meet the basic minimum qualification requirements established for the position will be placed in the Eligible category. This evaluation is based on the level of your experience, education, and/or training as determined by your responses to the Assessment Questionnaire.
