These positions are located in the maintenance division at Assateague Island National Seashore in Berlin, MD & Chincoteague, VA.
Temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours in a service year may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs.
The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is May-November, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2021.

As a Laborer, WG-3502-7, you will be responsible for performing laboring duties that require moderately heavy physical effort and the use of common hand tools and power equipment to perform the following duties:
– Operate large, complex riding lawn mowers and beach/parking lot drags.
– Perform routine custodial tasks on buildings and grounds such as cleaning restrooms.
– Load and unload supplies and materials from trucks, trailers, dollies, etc.
– Move furniture, remove and set signs, paint picnic tables and signs, rake and water lawns, trim trees and shrubbery, pick up litter, and clean and repair fire pits.
– Operate vehicles over Federal, state, and country roads and city streets in all traffic conditions, and perform minor operator maintenance on light duty motor vehicles.
– Operate different types of equipment (e.g., lawn edging equipment, trimmers, brush cutters, brush chippers, etc.) and hand tools (e.g., shovels, picks, digging bars, rakes).
Area Information: Assateague Island National Seashore is located on the Atlantic coast of Maryland and Virginia, approximately 130 miles east of Washington, D.C. The area is largely rural, with numerous small towns and the seaside resorts. There are two Duty Locations: 1) Berlin, MD – the resort community of Ocean City, MD is located within 10 miles and offer medical facilities, entertainment, shopping and restaurants. 2) Chincoteague, VA – which offers medical facilities, entertainment, shopping and restaurants. Salisbury, MD, about 30 miles away, has a university, a large hospital, shopping and restaurants. Summers are hot and humid, with high temperatures commonly in the 90's. Winters are mild with little snow and daytime temperatures usually above freezing.
Occasional travel – You may be expected to travel for this position.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).
If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.
The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

Physical Demands:The work performed requires the exertion of moderate to very heavy physical effort. The work involves lifting and moving objects over 50 pounds, and in some cases, carrying 80 to 100 pounds (or more) with assistance.
Working Conditions: Outside work is usually performed under all kinds of weather conditions. Indoor work is often accomplished in office buildings or in well-lighted, heated, and ventilated areas such as warehouses, loading docks, or trade shops. Frequently exposed to weather and temperature extremes, drafts, noise, dust. and dirt and the possibility of bruises, muscle strains, cuts and scrapes. Work requires the employee to follow proper safety procedures and use standard safety equipment such as gloves, ear protectors, safety glasses, and steel-toe shoes to avoid possible hazards in the work area.
