Wells Fargo Legal Department

The Legal Department supports the vision, values & goals of Wells Fargo by providing expert, creative, cost-effective, and timely advice and services to all Wells Fargo businesses and support functions. The Role

The Managing Counsel will lead a team of lawyers and paralegals that support the Wealth Investment Management Litigation section.  Primarily, this team will provide support to Wells Fargo Advisors (WFA) which provides investment advice and guidance to clients throughout more than 14,000 Financial Advisors and Licensed Bankers in retail branches across the U.S. 

 

  • Lead the Team to provide expert, creative, timely and consistent legal support for the administration of the Protocol for Broker Recruiting, promissory note actions before the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, handle intra-industry disputes and privacy concerns.
  • Work with other leaders and subject matter experts in the Legal Department to advance and coordinate effective legal support for business, Company and Department goals.
  • Serve as a legal advisor to senior executives and senior leaders of WFA, providing legal, strategic planning and risk management advice.
  • Serve as a contributing member of various committees and working groups, delegating as appropriate
  • Follow and ensure consistent application of Company and Department policies and procedures, including the management of outside counsel.
  • Participate as a member of the Wealth Investment Management Litigation leadership team.

 

The Candidate

 

The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in managing teams of legal professionals and substantial experience providing advice to senior business leaders. The successful candidate will also have a demonstrated ability to set a strategic vision and to execute on that vision.  All candidates must possess strong verbal and written communications skills; interpersonal skills; excellent organizational skills; superior judgment and attention to detail; flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities and deadlines and an ability to evaluate impacts based upon changes in laws/regulations and develop strategic Company responses.

 

As a Team Member Manager, you are expected to achieve success by leading yourself, your team, and the business. Specifically you will:

 

  • Lead your team with integrity and create an environment where your team members feel included, valued, and supported to do work that energizes them.
  • Accomplish management responsibilities, which include sourcing and hiring talented team members, providing ongoing coaching and feedback, recognizing and developing team members, identifying and managing risks, and completing daily management tasks.

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience as a practicing attorney; or 8+ years of experience as a practicing attorney and 2+ years of experience in one or a combination of the following areas: risk, compliance, contracts, government/regulatory, financial services, or technology
  • Active State Bar membership
  • 1+ year of leadership experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Business development experience including development and execution of business vision, strategies, and goals
  • Leadership and management experience for team of attorneys and staff with a section or legal specialty including developing virtual staff and managing a budget
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships within and across business lines at all levels of the organization
  • Effective organizational, multi tasking, and prioritizing skills
  • Ability to make complex decisions

Other Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated legal background in managing litigation and arbitration concerning broker dealers, associated persons and customer sales practice issues
  • Experience as a practicing attorney managing litigation with a major law firm, SRO or in-house law department
  • Experience interacting with and presenting to senior executive legal and business management, regulators or other internal or external stakeholders
  • Experience managing and developing teams across diverse geographic areas
  • Experience leading a team or cross-functional group in significant tasks or projects
  • Experience interacting with and presenting to senior executive legal and business management, regulators or other internal or external stakeholders
  • Enterprise-level experience supporting corporate regulatory and corporate risk issues, and working with broad and executive –level committees
  • Ability to:

    • Lead and manage teams, projects, and work across multiple geographic locations
    • Positively and effectively lead and motivate the team to prioritize work, meet deadlines, achieve goals, and work effectively, efficiently, and with intensity in a dynamic and complex environment
    • Develop and maintain effective relationships within and across business lines at all levels of the organization
    • Exercise good judgment and make critical decisions under pressure.
    • Manage a budget
    • Adapt to and support change in a dynamic work environment
    • Inspire, motivate, and lead by example
