Overview

JOB SUMMARY

This position will provide legal support and advice to the Company on litigation matters and will manage threatened or pending lawsuits and other disputes involving the Company. In addition to litigation matters, this position will advise the Claims and Risk Management Department on legal issues and strategies for efficient resolution of claims. This position also is responsible for collaborating with outside counsel and employees at all levels within the Company to provide advice and guidance.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Effectively and efficiently manage pending and threatened tort and commercial lawsuits involving the Company.

  • Manage and direct outside counsel handling litigation, investigations, and related matters on behalf of the Company.

  • Direct investigations of incidents that could give rise to liability for the Company, and ensure the preservation of relevant documentary, physical, and electronic evidence.

  • Identify and investigate potential compliance and liability risks and provide appropriate legal advice to business units.

  • Develop and implement ESI best practice protocols and effectively manage the legal hold process.

  • Counsel and advise the Claims and Risk Management Department on legal issues and strategies for resolving claims, working closely with Claims Specialists to identify potential legal risks and communicate those risks with the appropriate business units.

  • Regularly interact with the business to understand Company operations, policies and procedures, and initiatives.

  • Build constructive working relationships with internal business partners and outside legal counsel.

  • Participate in appropriate legal and industry groups to identify best practices in managing litigation.

  • Assist with management of the legal budget, including oversight and approval of outside counsel spend.

  • Identify opportunities to improve legal processes and operations.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Graduate of an American Bar Association accredited law school with at least an L.L.B. or J.D. degree and strong academic credentials.

  • At least 6 years of litigation experience practicing in relevant areas of law as in-house counsel and/or in private practice.

  • Solid working knowledge of relevant utility statues, regulations, and guidance documents related to the business.

  • Licensed to practice law in one or more states in which the company or its subsidiaries operate.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines.

  • Strong focus on inclusion, innovative thinking, and providing excellent customer service.

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills

  • Extensive analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Able to work autonomously on complex projects.

  • Must be willing to do occasional travel.
