<strong>Engineering Aide I</strong><br /><br /><strong>An Overview</strong><br />The Department of Transportation and Environmental Services (T&ES) is seeking an Engineering Aide I to perform technical and skilled paraprofessional work to support the Permits Center. The primary focus of this position is to review, approve and issue permits for work in the right of way. The work is performed under general supervision by the Permits Manager.<br /><br /><strong> The Opportunity </strong><ul> <li>Provides service for internal and external customers seeking information or applying for permits; <li>Issues permits for public improvements by developers or City contractors within the City limits; <li>Reviews applications and issues permits for work in the right of way such as excavation, construction, building, demolition, hauling, and sewer taps for completeness; <li>Verifies information by referring to plats and other sources, determines compliance with clearly-defined and well-established guidelines, and computes fees; <li>Issues and reviews applications for Certificates of Occupancy for existing and new single family and commercial units; <li>Prepares and processes purchase orders, payment vouchers, and invoices; <li>Reviews applications for utility lines, undergrounding, and waiver requests; <li>Receives complaints and inquiries from departments and citizens, and responds accordingly; <li>Processes applications for curb cuts to create driveway entrances, reserved parking, noise variances, and special events; <li>Performs related work and completes training as required.</li></li></li></li></li></li></li></li></li></li></ul><br /><strong>The Ideal Candidate</strong><br />To qualify for this position, all candidates must possess a High School Diploma or GED with successful completion of high-school-level math and English courses; at least one year of experience in paraprofessional engineering work; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.<br /><br />To be considered as an ideal candidate, one should also possess good knowledge of paraprofessional engineering practices and procedures; good knowledge, or ability to make mathematical computations; ability to read plats, plans, specifications, and blueprints; ability to communicate, clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, with employees, contractors, and the general public; ability to follow verbal and written instructions.<br /><br /><strong>About the Department </strong><br /> T&ES is a community partner in shaping a livable, green, and prospering Alexandria.
