<b>Duties</b><br /><br /><b>Summary</b><br /><br />This position is located in the Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR), Smithsonian Facilities (SF), Smithsonian Institution. The incumbent serves under the general supervision of the Crafts Shop Supervisor and performs a variety of duties in the zone. The incumbent may be required to work late shifts, weekends and holidays and is subject to being called in for emergencies to restore the Smithsonian Institution to normal operations. <br /><br />Learn more about this agency <br /><br /><b>Responsibilities</b><br /><br />Smithsonian Facilities provides unparalleled stewardship of Smithsonian buildings, gardens, and facilities – operating, maintaining, and ensuring a safe, secure, healthy environment that enhances the Smithsonian experience for all. Responsible for the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and safety of the Smithsonian's world-wide facilities, we accomplish our mission and vision through four Strategic Goals:<br /> <ul> <li>Partnering with the Smithsonian Community</li> <li>Caring for Distinctive Buildings and Grounds</li> <li>Providing Exceptional Experiences for Internal and External Customers</li> <li>Cultivating a Highly Motivated and Dedicated Workforce</li> </ul> <br />For more information about Smithsonian Facilities, Click Here .<br /> <ul> <li>Installs, modifies and repairs new and existing high pressure piping systems and equipment such as steam heating, steam generation and hydraulic systems, steam generators, flash and expansion tanks.</li> <li>Installs, maintains, modifies, repairs and tests conventional piping systems, such as high pressure steam (up to 100 pounds), air, gas, refrigerant, hot and cold lines, and sewer system. </li> <li>Works with building plans, blueprints, sketches and specifications to plan and layout the routine placement and proper operation of systems and equipment.</li> <li>Prepares and assembles for installation by cutting, threading and bending pipe.</li> <li>Repairs leaks and clears obstructions in pipes and waste lines, storm drains fixtures and traps by using electric and flexible hand held augers, suction cups, and compressed air guns. </li> </ul> <br /><br /><b>Travel Required</b><br /><br />Not required<br /><br />Supervisory status <br /> No <br /><br />Promotion Potential <br /> 11 <br /><br /></li> <b>Requirements</b><br /><br /><b>Conditions of Employment</b><br /><br /><ul> <li>Pass Pre-employment Background Investigation.</li> <li>May need to complete a Probationary Period.</li> <li>Maintain a Bank Account for Direct Deposit/Electronic Transfer.</li> <li>Males born after 12/31/59 must be registered with Selective Service.</li> <li>Must have a valid state or District of Columbia driver's license.</li> </ul> <br /><br /><strong>Physical Requirements: </strong><br /><br />Pipefitters make repairs and installation from ladders, scaffolding and platforms, and where the work is in hard-to-reach places. They are required to stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring positions. They frequently lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift more than 50 pounds.
