<b>Duties</b><br /><br /><b>Summary</b><br /><br />This position is located in the Conservation and Preservation Management Branch of the Collections Services Division, National Institute for Holocaust Documentation. The Conservator has responsibility for performing the full range of conservation and preservation work concerned with technical treatment and related research for a wide variety of textiles and costumes of historic value.<br /><br />Learn more about this agency <br /><br /><b>Responsibilities</b><br /><br />• The incumbent serves as the staff expert in the conservation and preservation of textiles and costumes and performs major and minor treatments. <br />• Examines and determines the type of treatment required for the various artifacts and materials. <br />• Researches and uses various methods, techniques, tools and equipment to treat, mount and house Museum Objects. <br />• Prepares treatment proposals, condition and treatment reports.<br />• Develops innovative treatment procedures to solve new and different problems which arise. <br />• Maintains records of treatment and examination procedures and reports. <br />• Advises and provides training for USHMM staff and contractors in safe procedures and techniques for the treatment, handling, transit, storage, mounting and exhibition.<br />• Inspects the work of the Exhibits Collections Care team to ensure that it meets professional Museum standards.<br />• Provides advice on proper environmental conditions.<br />• Advises and monitors the influences of macro and micro environments.<br />• Develops, writes, and presents lectures, seminars and demonstrations on various aspects of conservation work.<br /><br />Supervisory status <br /> No <br /><br />Promotion Potential <br /> 12 <br /><br /></li> <b>Requirements</b><br /><br /><b>Conditions of Employment</b><br /><br /><ul> </ul> <br /> * <br /><br /><b>Qualifications</b><br /><br />Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level or 3 full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education or a Ph.D or equivalent degree related to the position. Specialized experience is work in the preservation of paper-based or photographic materials. In addition to the above, you must also meet the following selective placement factor and physical conditions outlined below to be qualified for this position:<br /><br />Selective Placement Factor (SPF): Failure to meet the SPF will result in your application being removed from further consideration. Knowledge of museum practices, principles and standards to oversee and participate in the conservation treatment and care of textile and costumes artifacts on exhibition and in storage and/or to record and report on the condition of the objects and their environments.<br /><br />Physical Conditions: The work requires agility and dexterity with hands, tools and equipment, the ability to lift up to 20 lbs, and endure long periods of standing, walking, bending and reaching. Work may involve moderately hazardous chemicals and flammable solvents for which special safety precautions are required. If selected for the position, you are required to undergo a pre- employment physical examination using the SF-78 "Certificate of Medical Examination" form. Knowledge of the principles, theories, concepts, methodologies and techniques of conservation applicable to the full range of treatment procedures and analyses required for the conservation and preservation of a wide variety of objects.<br />2. Ability to perceive the nature and condition of an object by using methods, instruments and techniques such as optical observation with visible, infrared, or ultraviolet light; observation with stereomicroscopes, light tables, or other instrumentation to stimulate image enhancement; measurements of physical properties including equilibrium humidity or solubility parameters; use of photographic equipment for visual documentation purposes; short duration testing using instruments such as thread counter, thermometer, hygrometer, and a variety of linear measurement devices; and ability to conduct sampling for chemical analyses and reactivity testing.<br />3. Knowledge of materials science and technology, organic and inorganic chemistry with a practical knowledge of physics.<br />4. Ability to communicate in writing in order to prepare/create various reports, reviews, studies, and technical publications concerning conservation/preservation of artifacts.<br /><br /><b>Education</b><br /><br /><b>Additional information</b><br /><br />This is a Federal Agency.
