<b>Duties</b><br /><br /><b>Summary</b><br /><br />A successful candidate in this position will be responsible for the development of policies and guidance to support understanding of and compliance with radiation protection of the public and the environmental laws, regulations, and directives through the application of environmental radiological protection programs.<br /><br />Learn more about this agency <br /><br /><b>Responsibilities</b><br /><br /><strong>As a Health Physicist, you will:</strong><br /> <ul> <li>Oversee the development of policies, requirements, and guidance to support understanding of and compliance with radiation protection of the public and the environment laws, regulations, and directives through the application of environmental radiological protection programs Department-wide.</li> <li>Serve as one of the Office's senior scientific specialists with specific responsibility for radioactive waste disposal systems, and radiological characterization and clearance of property from DOE sites.</li> <li>Provide technical advice to DOE program offices in the varied aspects of health physics technical problems and issues, and apply professional expertise and judgement in resolving such problems where a ready response is important for achieving desired results.</li> <li>Perform scientific, systematic and in-depth analyses of major issues and impacts of legislation and attendant rulemaking. Review and evaluate alternative sometimes conflicting scientific techniques for effectiveness and efficiency if implemented within the Department.</li> <li>Conduct or participate in high-level meetings.</li> <li>Consult and coordinate with other scientists, engineers, specialists and attorneys in the department in conjunction with experts of other agencies to exchange information on developments in radiation protection to assure compatibility with similar activities being conducted.</li> <li>Utilize contract effort for specific directed technical studies. Arrange for required contract information resources for technical support. Specialized experience for this position is defined as:<br /> <li>Demonstrated experience as a technical authority in a government agency or other large organization's radiation protection program.</li> <li>Experience developing or implementing radiation policies or guidelines.</li> <li>Providing subject matter expertise for radiation program activities; and</li> <li>Analyzing proposed standards and legislation to determine their effect on an organization, and representing an organization's interests.</li> <br />Your application and resume should demonstrate that you possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs). Cite specific examples of employment or experience contained in your resume and describe how this experience has prepared you to successfully perform the duties of this position.<br /> <li>Knowledge of laws and legislation (e.g., Atomic Energy Act, Nuclear Waste Policy Act, Low Level Waste Policy Amendments Act, Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act, Energy Reorganization Act and Price Anderson Act), and other federal guidance on radiation protection.</li> <li>Mastery knowledge of radiation protection principles, philosophy, concepts and practices, as well as in-depth knowledge of the evaluation of radiation protection standards, to serve as a Health Physicist who provides advice and assistance to management.</li> <li>Knowledge of national and international radiation protection standard-setting organizations, and the policies, standards and activities of other Federal and state agencies.</li> <li>Ability to establish effective interactions with specialists and officials in the organizations to promote Departmental views and monitor progress of the work.</li> <li>Ability to address technical and regulatory aspects of radioactive waste management, radioactive waste disposal site performance assessment, and property radiological control and release issues.</li> <li>Knowledge and ability to provide advice and consultation on the development and formulation of environmental policy positions, guidance, strategies and directives for management.</li> <li>Ability to and skill in oral and writing principles and practices to effectively communicate arguments and statements of position with professionals and management.</li> <br />"Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.<br /><br />or<br /><br />B. Combination of education and experience — courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.<br /><br /><strong>Transcripts and/or certification must be provided</strong>.<br /><br />Education must be obtained from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.<br />Foreign education must be reviewed by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
