<b>Duties</b><br /><br /><b>Summary</b><br /><br /><strong>About the Position: </strong>As a Prenatal Genetic Counselor in Maternal Fetal Medicine Clinic of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) you will perform a full range of prenatal genetic counseling. Research and formulate treatment plans/options for patients; and provide patient education. Must be sensitive while disclosing results that are both reassuring and disheartening.<br /> Learn more about this agency <br /><br /><b>Responsibilities</b><br /><br /><ul> <li>Provides comprehensive genetic counseling to the entire spectrum of clients who are referred by consultative request for genetic risk assessment, genetic counseling, and genetic testing.</li> <li>Utilizes established guidelines and standards of care which require significant interpretation.</li> <li>Provides input towards new approaches to patient service based on past experience and newly learned techniques, and participates and contributes to the development of standard operating procedures related to program implementation.</li> <li>Develops a flexible schedule to maximize counseling services in coordination with other members of the Pediatric Genetics division and the Breast Care Center.</li> <li>Identifies families at risk, interprets information about the disorder, analyzes inheritance patterns, and reviews available options with the family.</li> <li>Constructs family histories, provides risk factors and provides follow-up with genetic patients who require assistance with adjusting to their genetic conditions.</li> <li>Develops curricula and conducts lectures, small group discussions, and individual instruction for nursing, laboratory, and medical staff in all primary care and specialty areas.</li> <li>Orders, conducts, and interprets appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests, and prescribe treatments, and non-pharmacologic therapies.</li> <li>Participates in the authorship of reports, presentations and papers which increase the base of knowledge and information in the field of genetic counseling.</li> <li>Collects appropriate biological samples, assures adequate shipping and handling, resolution of billing questions, return of results.</li> <li>Aggregates, and analyzes data/information to make conclusions and recommendations to supervisor, other clinicians and peers to improve practice patterns, efficiency, and effectiveness of individuals and systems.</li> </ul> <br /><br /><b>Travel Required</b><br /><br />Occasional travel – Up to 5% business travel may be requried.<br /><br />Supervisory status <br /> No <br /><br />Promotion Potential <br /> None <br /><br /></li> <b>Requirements</b><br /><br /><b>Conditions of Employment</b><br /><br /><ul> <li>This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. This degree must be from an educational program accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
