<b>Duties</b><br /><br /><b>Summary</b><br /><br />This position is located within the Washington DC Veteran Affairs Medical Center (DC VAMC), Facilities Management Service (FMS) Building and Trades section and works at the journeyman level. Incumbent must have a complete and thorough knowledge of the Masonry and Plastering trade practices along with the skill to apply the associated work methods and techniques. <br /> Learn more about this agency <br /><br /><b>Responsibilities</b><br /><br />Your duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: <ul> <li>Maintain, repair, alter, and construction of interior and exterior surfaces built from a variety of stone;</li> <li>Cut and shape brick, block and stone in construction;</li> <li>Repair window and door openings and corners;</li> <li>Lay brick in straight, horizontal rows;</li> <li>Perform complex brickwork;</li> <li>Determine appropriate materials to be used and accomplish work in accordance with appropriate methods and accepted trade practices;</li> <li>Lay common and facebrick, cinder and cement block, terra cotta, mosaic tile and various artificial and natural stone in the construction and repair of such items as walls, walks, floors, manholes, catch basins, etc. </li> </ul> <b>Work Schedule</b>: Full-Time, Generally, 8-hour shifts from 7:00a-3:30p; some shift work may be required; dependent on needs of agency<br /><br /><strong>Relocation/Recruitment Incentives: </strong>Not authorized <br /><br /><b>Travel Required</b><br /><br />Not required<br /><br />Supervisory status <br /> No <br /><br />Promotion Potential <br /> 10 <br /><br /></li> <b>Requirements</b><br /><br /><b>Conditions of Employment</b><br /><br /><ul> <li>You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job</li> <li>Subject to a background/security investigation</li> <li>Designated and/or random drug testing may be required</li> <li>Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959</li> <li>May be required to serve a probationary period</li> <li>Pre-employment physical may be required</li> <li>Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process</li> </ul> <br /><br /><b>Qualifications</b><br /><br /><strong>PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: </strong>The employee is frequently required to perform heavy lifting up to 90 pounds in carrying bricks, block, stone, mortar, cement, and sand. The employee is required to continually stand while working and must frequently climb ladders and scaffolds. The employee is exposed to a variety of weather conditions while outdoors. The employee is subject to danger of falling when working from ladders and scaffolds. There is exposure to dust and dirt while mixing mortar and while handling various masonry materials.<br /><br />Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications . For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.
