A pre-employment physical is required.</li> <li>A background investigation may be required.</li> </ul> <br /><br /><b>Qualifications</b><br /><br /><strong>QUALIFICATIONS: </strong>In order to qualify, you must meet the basic requirements <strong>and</strong> specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions for General Medical and Healthcare Series, 0601.<br /><br /><strong>BASIC REQUIREMENTS: </strong>Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained. <strong>NOTE: </strong>You must submit a copy of official transcripts.<br /> <strong>AND</strong><br /> <strong>SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: </strong> Applicants must meet basic requirements and have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-07, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes knowledge of gross and microscopic human anatomy and pathophysiology to perform a variety of standard specialized tests in order to distinguish normal versus disease states, including variations in size, configuration and structural details of all human organs and organ systems, including visceral organs, central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, cardiovascular system, musculoskeletal system and respiratory system at all stages of development; knowledge of and skill in applying, established concepts, principles, and methodologies of medical, histopathology and cytology to perform/monitor the full range of specialized procedures, run quality controls, and make/recommend modifications to technical and administrative procedures. One year at the GS-07 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-09 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks.<br /><br /><strong>KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): </strong>Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: <li>Professional knowledge of gross and microscopic human anatomy and pathophysiology to perform a variety of standard specialized tests in order to distinguish normal versus disease states, including variations in size, configuration and structural details of all human organs and organ systems, including visceral organs, central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, cardiovascular system, musculoskeletal system and respiratory system at all stages of development.</li> <li>Professional specialized training in order to use and maintain instruments such as the full spectrum of laboratory microscopes; automated stainers; tissue processors; cryostats; microtomes; pH meters; routine; immune photomicroscopes; embedding centers; recyclers; desiccator, and high pressure balances. Knowledge of technical, physiological and mechanical indicators of malfunction (instrument functions, faulty stains) to locate and correct errors.</li> <li>Thorough knowledge of the specificity, sensitivity, sources of error, and interpretation of results for procedures performed in order to identify the root cause analysis in histology. Knowledge of methods to package samples for proper transport, ensuring shipping specimens meet appropriate testing criteria meeting all documentation requirements for shipping samples, accurately placing orders and results into the computer system.</li> <li>Knowledge and ability to use computer systems to document finds/results of tests and to generate required reports on the subject matter content of the materials being processed.</li> <li>Ability to work independently, efficiently, and productively while maintaining control under stressful working conditions, including the ability to make decisions and set priorities. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and written using tact and courtesy.</li> <li>Ability to analyze critical patient data to suggest alternative specimen testing procedures which support to logical protocol for the health care provider to confirm patient diagnosis.</li> <strong>PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: </strong>Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work.
