<b>Duties</b><br /><br /><b>Summary</b><br /><br /><strong>Join the team!</strong> This position is located in the Office of Hazard Identification and Reduction, Directorate for Laboratory Sciences (LS), Division of Mechanical Engineering (LSM). The selectee for this position will work daily in the laboratory primarily to carry out its responsibility for determining hazards associated with mechanical-centered products, such as children's toys, home and garden products, bicycle helmets, and pool and spa safety related products and systems.<br /><br />Learn more about this agency <br /><br /><b>Responsibilities</b><br /><br />Serves as an expert mechanical engineer, consultant, and manager of test programs and/or projects within LSM, is recognized on a national level as an expert in a related agency program area, representing the agency at voluntary standards meetings, presenting at conferences and preparing expert reports and papers. This includes associated administrative tasks such as developing test programs or projects, space and personnel requirements, and testing cost estimates. Detailed recommendations are prepared for the Division Director (DD) for long range planning and budget projections to efficiently use the allocations of resources of both a fiscal and personnel nature. <br /><br />Provides technical direction in the establishment of an overall Commission mechanical engineering compliance test program and manages all testing associated with mechanical hazards. This includes such tasks as scheduling, establishing and maintaining credibility of test programs, maintaining test sample integrity, and test report review and approval.<br /><br />Serves on multi-disciplinary Laboratory and Commission projects that include the development of standard methods and procedures to assure consistency with Commission policy. Conceives of new work, responding to shifts in program emphasis in concert with Commission priorities. Assignments are concerned with the solution of controversial or unique engineering problems, which may require bringing together staff with mechanical, electrical, and flammability expertise within the Laboratory to work on projects to resolve problems that can affect the nationwide mission of the Commission's testing programs. You will need to provide the information annually.<br /><br />You are applying under Delegated Examining and if selected under this authority, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period, even if you are a transfer from another federal agency.<br /><br /><b>Qualifications</b><br /><br />In addition to the mandatory education requirement, all applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.<br /><br />Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following: <strong><br /></strong><br /><br />(1) Extensive technical experience in the area of engineering or related scientific fields for the testing and evaluation of to consumer products; (2) experience communicating with and providing leadership to a group of highly technical scientific employees and external stakeholders; and (3) extensive experience managing multi-disciplinary project teams.<br /><br />Evidence of the above specialized experience must be supported by detailed documentation of duties performed in positions held.
