<b>Duties</b><br /><br /><b>Summary</b><br /><br />The Pharmacy Technician at the McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia serves as a direct assistant to the Pharmacist. The Pharmacy Technician must have an understanding of the workflow, routine, and responsibilities of the Pharmacy program for both inpatient and outpatient processes and procedures; and, must be able to work both independently and under the direction of a Pharmacist.<br /> Learn more about this agency <br /><br /><b>Responsibilities</b><br /><br /><ul> <li>Prepares aseptic admixture, including cytoxic agents.</li> <li>Automatic and Omnicell stock replenishment, maintenance and operation of automated prepackaging storage and dispensing equipment.</li> <li>Receives and reviews pharmacy dispensing orders for accuracy of information, duplication, and authorization for dispensing in order to process.</li> <li>Reads and interprets prescriptions, obtains proper medication or material in the proper strength and dosage form; determines proper amount and counts, pours, or measures the medications; affixes proper label; and records required data on pharmacy's copy of prescription/order.</li> <li>Prepares outpatient medications in ambulatory care and discharge situations. Dispenses medications to patient pickup window after a final check by a pharmacist.</li> <li>Prepares inpatient drug orders including all medicinal dosage forms such as chemotherapy, intravenous admixtures, oral solids, etc., according to established procedures and protocols.</li> <li>Inventories and replenishes emergency carts.</li> <li>Fills ward/Omnicell orders for a variety of drugs including tablets, capsules, liquids, injections, etc. for wards and clinics without secondary review.</li> <li>Fills outpatient prescriptions including those by hand, by automated dispensing machine, and responsible for the maintenance and operation of the machine; including refilling machine prior to pharmacist review.</li> <li>Compounds and/or reconstitutes oral or external medications (non-sterile), including calculating and converting to proper weights and measures the amount of drug or solution to be used.</li> <li>Prepares all intravenous admixture products such as hyperalimentation, piggyback, peritoneal dialysis, narcotic drips, etc. utilizing pharmaceutical knowledge and aseptic technique as required by USP 797 guidelines under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.</li> <li>Inventories ward areas and clinics for IV fluids, irrigating solutions, and administration sets utilizing pre-established levels in order to provide sufficient quantities of these items to meet patients' daily needs.</li> </ul> <strong>Work schedule: </strong>Rotating shifts/evenings, weekends and holidays.<br /> <strong>Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Status</strong>: Non-Exempt<br /> <strong>Supervisory Position:</strong> No<br /> <strong>Bargaining Unit Position: </strong>Yes<br /> <strong>Recruitment/relocation incentives</strong>: Not authorized for this position.<br /> <strong>Relocation expenses: </strong>Not authorized for this position.<br /> <strong>Financial Disclosure: </strong>Not required. <br /><br /><b>Travel Required</b><br /><br />Not required<br /><br />Supervisory status <br /> No <br /><br />Promotion Potential <br /> None <br /><br /></li> <b>Requirements</b><br /><br /><b>Conditions of Employment</b><br /><br /><ul> <li>You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job</li> <li>Designated and/or random drug testing may be required</li> <li>Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959</li> <li>You may be required to serve a probationary period</li> <li>Subject to a background/security investigation</li> <li>Must be proficient in written and spoken English</li> </ul> <br /><br /><b>Qualifications</b><br /><br />To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/08/2019.<br /><br /><strong>Basic Requirements.</strong><br /><br />United States Citizenship – Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.<br /><br />Education or Experience – A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.<br /><br />Certification – Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.<br /><br />Physical Requirements – This work requires repetitive motion, standing, walking, reaching, stooping, lifting heavy objects up to 50 pounds, pushing heavy or bulky carts and at times this job is physically demanding, sometimes for extended periods of time.<br /><br />English Language Proficiency – Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d)<br /><br /><strong>Grade Determinations.</strong><br /><br /><strong>GS-6: </strong>One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-5 level in Federal Service).
