The Litigation Assistant Counsel reports to the Senior Associate Counsel in the Office of University Counsel’s litigation section, under the overall supervision and direction of the Vice President and University Counsel. This position will assist System Administration and the CU campuses as a result of the individual’s expertise with a particular legal issue or area.
The individual in this position: (1) possesses advanced knowledge associated with the professional practice of law; (2) applies associated theories, methods, principles, and practices; (3) performs associated duties that are predominantly intellectual and varied in nature, requiring creative, analytical, evaluative, interpretive, and/or critical thinking; and (4) exercises discretion and independent judgment, requiring only general supervision for day-to-day tasks.
This position is exempt from the State of Colorado Classified Staff system.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
- Provide legal representation and advice through both trial and appellate work in state and federal courts, and before administrative agencies, including drafting pleadings, briefs, correspondence, discovery, settlement agreements and other documents as required. Case load is primarily defense of lawsuits brought by employees and students.
- Communicate with campus constituents, including senior leadership, and risk management in regards to litigation matters.
- Communicate with internal and external attorneys in regards to litigation information.
- Provide advisory assistance to the campuses and system administration when requested.
- Assist with varied activities, such as internal investigations when requested.
- Contribute to the in-house continuing legal education programs for the office.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

- Knowledge of Colorado Rules of Civil Procedure, Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, and Judicial Practice Standards.

- Five (5) years of complex litigation experience, including significant writing experience.
- Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Colorado licensure to practice law (or obtaining such licensure within one year of hire).
- Knowledge of federal and state laws concerning higher education institutions, employment, and state government.
