We are seeking a qualified attorney for a position in the UnitedHealthcare Legal, Compliance and Regulatory Affairs Department with primary responsibility for providing labor and employment law advice and support to UnitedHealthcare. The successful candidate will have 15+ years of labor and employment law experience. The position will be preferably based at UnitedHealthcare’s Minnetonka, Minnesota headquarters. We will consider strong candidates in other locations where there is a UnitedHealthcare office.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Advise on labor and employment law matters to include hiring, terminations, discrimination, wage & hour issues, disability accommodation, state and federal compliance (e.g., ADA, ADEA, Title VII, FMLA, FLSA, OFCCP and WARN Act), investigations and traditional labor law
  • Manage employment arbitrations and litigation
  • Support resolution of attorney demand letters, and Federal, state and local agency claims and charges
  • Provide comprehensive employment law support for mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures
  • Prepare, negotiate, and evaluate risks involved with complex employment and similar agreements, including those containing employee non-competes and other restrictive covenants
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of industry-leading practices and trends
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to develop best practices for addressing emerging legal and business risks
  • Provide educational information and training on labor and employment matters
  • Occasional travel

Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate
  • 15+ years of legal experience focused on labor and employment matters with a law firm and/or in-house legal department
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state employment laws and related compliance issues
  • Adept at working in a fast-paced, performance-driven culture
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Sound judgment and business instincts
  • Demonstrated leadership, initiative, resilience and ability to embrace change
  • Ability to collaborate and build relationships across a highly matrixed enterprise
  • Ability to model corporate values of integrity, compassion, relationships, innovation and performance
  • Experience advising businesses having operations in multiple states
  • License to practice law in the state of residence

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Licensed to practice law or ability to become licensed in Minnesota
  • In house experience
  • Experience with mergers and acquisitions
  • Experience with international employment law and/or a global business model
  • Health care industry experience
  • Some traditional labor law experience
