<b>Duties</b><br /><br /><b>Summary</b><br /><br />This position is located in the Office of Accident Investigation and Prevention (AVP) within the FAA's Office of Aviation Safety (AVS).<br /><br />Learn more about this agency <br /><br /><b>Responsibilities</b><br /><br />The incumbent is responsible for conducting research and analysis in support of AVS initiatives. The incumbent applies experience and advanced technical knowledge applicable to statistical research methods and techniques (e.g. modeling, programming, decision analysis, and data visualization) in support of the mission of the Office of Accident Investigation and Prevention and other key AVS supported initiatives. The incumbent leverages multiple sources of aviation safety data and is skillful formulating queries and conducting advances analyses. The incumbent will assist in the coordination of major program development activities of the Office of Accident Investigation and Prevention, FAA Aviation Safety Information Analysis and Sharing (ASIAS), General Aviation Joint Steering Committee (GAJSC), and Commercial Aviation Safety Team (CAST). These groups may consist of FAA staff members, representatives of domestic and international airlines, manufacturers, employee groups, air traffic organizations, and others in the worldwide aviation community.<br /><br />Performs multiple, varying, and complex assignments under the limited direction of a manager, project/ program manager, team leader, or more experienced technical specialist. May act as a contributing specialist on large work activities or as a team leader for single or small work activities.<br /><br />Typical assignments may include: system design and integration; rule making; investigation and inspection activities; compliance and enforcement actions; extensive research; and shared responsibility for project/program management.<br /><br />Defines, plans, and organizes assigned resources to accomplish organizational objectives. Allocates resources to accomplish small work-activities within established schedules.<br /><br />Contacts are internal and external. May act as a key technical point of contact for assigned activities. Contributes to the preparation of management/technical reports or contractual documents, and may communicate the overall results of a project or work activity to FAA management, the aviation and aerospace industries, and other external parties.<br /><br />Established policies/procedures provide guidance for most assignments, but allow considerable discretion to select the most appropriate approach or to recommend new approaches. Assignments typically require solutions that are to be derived by interpreting and extrapolating from situations that were faced in the past. Provides recommendations to improve work processes.<br /><br />Provides guidance to lower-level technical staff on how to solve difficult technical issues. Resolves all but unique technical problems without the intervention of management or a more experienced technical specialist. Identifies and informs management of problems that require their attention. Often develops and recommends techniques to address problem situations.<br /><br /><strong>If Selected at the J-band, the incumbent will perform the additional duties:</strong><br /><br />The incumbent applies experience and comprehensive technical knowledge applicable to statistical research methods and techniques (e.g. modeling, programming, decision analysis, and data visualization) in support of the mission of the Office of Accident Investigation and Prevention and other key AVS supported initiatives.<br /><br />Work Performs multiple, varying and complex assignments under the minimal direction of a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced technical specialist. Acts as principal technical specialist or as a project manager or team leader for large work activities.<br /><br />Assignments frequently require knowledge and experience working across functional and/or organizational lines. Typical assignments may include: complex system design and integration; extensive research and analyses; investigation and inspection activities; compliance and enforcement actions; and direct responsibility for project/program management.<br /><br /><b>Travel Required</b><br /><br />Occasional travel – The job may require travel from time- to-time, but not on a regular basis. At least 3 of the 24 semester hours must have been in calculus.<br /><br /><strong>To qualify for this position at the I-band: </strong> you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to FV-H, FG/GS- 12 in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.<br /><br />Specialized experience may include but not limited to: Experience applying research methods and techniques in support of an agencies mission. Experience with assisting with the development, maintaining and utilizing of databases.<br /><br /><strong>To qualify for this position at the J-band</strong>: you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to FV-I, FG/GS- 13 in the Federal Service.
