<b>Duties</b><br /><br /><b>Summary</b><br /><br />The VA Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS) is a Level I tertiary multi campus teaching facility affiliated with the University of Maryland, School of Medicine and over 100 educational institutions. The VAMHCS consists of the acute care Baltimore facility; the multi building Perry Point campus with acute medicine, mental health and long term care; the Loch Raven campus with long term care; and six urban and rural outpatient clinics.<br /> Learn more about this agency <br /><br /><b>Responsibilities</b><br /><br />A position exists for a Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) at the Baltimore location of the VA Maryland Health Care System within the Surgical Department, Unit 5B. The CNL leads clinical practice on the unit through education, mentoring and upholding clinical standards. He/She will play a large role in oversight of the clinical care to all surgical, medicine and telemetry patients, to include audits and clinical practice reviewsand implementation of performance improvements. Unit 5B is a 22-bed acute Medical/Surgical Inpatient Unit with plans to extend to offer telemetry monitoring. The population ranges from the young adult to geriatric patients experiencing medical conditions and/or surgical procedures. Some of the Primary medicine diagnoses include CHF, ESRD, COPD, ETOH, DM. Pre/Post-operative care provided for the following surgical disciplines General Surgery, Orthopedics, Gynecology, Urology, Vascular, Neurosurgery, Plastics, Podiatry, Ophthalmology, Podiatry, Thoracic, Dental, ENT and other underlining medical conditions. The CNL practices expert level nursing at the microsystem level. Through collaboration with the Nurse Manager, the CNL is accountable for the nursing practice on the unit and provides clinical leadership at the point of care. The CNL will create conditions of excellence, coordinate care for patients, initiate quality improvement activities and promote care delivery designs to improve outcomes on the microsystem. The CNL is an expert clinical nurse with responsibilities as assigned under the supervision of the Nurse Manager or designee and the incumbent reports directly to 5B Nurse Manager. Must have demonstrated ability to work effectively with others as a member of the health care team, able to communicate effectively-verbally and in writing in a manner that enhances patient outcomes, managed care, and collaborates with multidisciplinary healthcare team. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. <strong>OR</strong> The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) <strong>OR</strong> In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.</li> <li>Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.</li> <li>Proficient in speaking, reading, and understanding the English language.</li> <li>Physically, mentally and emotionally fit to perform the duties of the position.</li> </ul> <strong>Preferred Experience:</strong> <ul> <li>Master's degree in Nursing, preferred</li> <li>Clinical Nurse Certification, highly desired</li> <li>At least 3-5 years of Medical/Surgical experience, within the last 5 years.</li> <li>Current ACLS/BLS preferred</li> </ul> <br /> <strong>Grade Determinations</strong>: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: <ul> <li>Nurse I Level I – An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.</li> <li>Nurse I Level II – An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.</li> <li>Nurse I Level III – An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.</li> <li>Nurse II – A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.</li> <li>Nurse III – Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.</li> </ul> <strong>Reference:</strong> VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard.
