<b>Duties</b><br /><br /><b>Summary</b><br /><br />This position is assigned to the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Salem, Virginia. The Medical Technician performs nonprofessional technical work in one or more areas of a clinical laboratory, such as phlebotomy, accessioning and processing, chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, and microbiology.<br /><br />Learn more about this agency <br /><br /><b>Responsibilities</b><br /><br />Some of the duties and responsibilities of this position include (but are not limited to): <ul> <li>Independently perform routine and specialized venipuncture of inpatients and outpatients at the VAMC in order to obtain blood specimens for clinical laboratory testing</li> <li>Analyze and problem solve erroneous lab results, and makes appropriate clinical decisions based on these results</li> <li>Monitor quality control as required by CAP and other accrediting bodies</li> <li>Ensure accurate patient and specimen identifiers</li> <li>Accurately accession laboratory orders for blood collection using computer systems and generates computer-printed labels</li> <li>Receive specimens delivered to the laboratory for analysis in a centralized processing location</li> <li>Perform specimen processing functions</li> <li>Perform other related duties as assigned</li> </ul> DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.<br /><br />In order to qualify for this position, you must possess at least one of the following criteria: <ul> <li>SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in federal service. Specialized experience is technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings; or technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. Specific qualifying specialized experience for this position (which should be documented on your resume) is: performing basic phlebotomy duties in a medical setting (such as a physician's office, outpatient clinic, and/or hospital); correctly processing and storing laboratory specimens; and filing or retrieving laboratory test information (either manually or by use of computer). </li> <li>EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: Successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study (or at least 24 semester hours) in subjects appropriate to this position as a Medical Technician. NOTE TO APPLICANTS: One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED – If you do not submit a copy of your transcript, your application may not be processed.)</li> <li>COMBINATION: Possess equivalent combinations of experience and education as described above to fully meet the requirements of this position. For GS-5 level positions, only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.
