The University of Illinois seeks a highly-skilled and experienced attorney to join the Office of University Counsel at the Urbana-Champaign university. The successful candidate will join a highly effective group of in-house attorneys as an Assistant or Associate University Counsel, depending on qualifications and experience. The Assistant/Associate University Counsel is a vital member of the University of Illinois System’s in-house legal team and operations at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Duties:

Under the direction of the Campus Legal Counsel, the Assistant/Associate University Counsel will have primary responsibility for the management of numerous and varied legal matters and will provide timely and effective advice and counsel to various University units and personnel. Subject matter responsibility will focus on various labor, employment, investigatory and other related matters, including serving as a primary point of contact for employment-related disputes, working closing with the Office of Access and Equity, advising on complex union-related labor transactions, supporting key clients related to faculty employment matters, advising on various compliance issues such as the Family and Medical Leave Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act, and other matters as assigned.

Qualifications:

The candidate must be capable of handling a high volume, working with minimal supervision. The candidate must work well within a dynamic team, be an excellent communicator, and be willing to develop new areas of sub-specialty as needs may arise. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in the subject matter, excellent judgment, collegiality, client counseling and multi-tasking skills. Candidates must possess a Juris Doctorate from an American Bar Association accredited law school and be licensed and in good standing to practice law in the State of Illinois, or eligible for admission to practice within six months of employment, and possess at least three years’ relevant experience.

The salary range for this position: Assistant University Counsel within a salary range of $85,000-$97,500, dependent on experience; Associate University Counsel within a salary range of $100,000-$112,500, dependent on experience.
