<b>Duties</b><br /><br /><b>Summary</b><br /><br />This position is located in DHS, U.S. Coast Guard, Deputy Commandant for Mission Support (DCMS), Office of Plans, Policy, and Doctrine (DCMS-55), Mission Support Integration Office (DCMS-5), Washington, DC.<br /><br />Learn more about this agency <br /><br /><b>Responsibilities</b><br /><br />You will serve as an Operations Research Analyst working with Coast Guard (CG) leadership to correct deficiencies in or improve the performance of enterprise-wide systems, processes, or operations through the application mathematical and statistical modeling techniques that provide understanding of the strategic risks and resource allocations associated with CG Mission Support.<br /><br />Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Status applicants applying for a promotion must have 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade.<br /><br /><b>Qualifications</b><br /><br />In addition to the education requirements above:<br /><br />For GS-13, applicants must possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in Federal service: performing analysis on data on the workforce; use complex quantitatigve analytical abilities, including knowledgte of data warehousing/data manipulation, times series modeling, optimization, and computer simulation; use analyses and models to design accurately forecast trends in the agency's workforce; and analyze current outside influences such as economical and government factors.<br /><br />Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.<br /><br />National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. <br /><br /><b>Education</b><br /><br />This position has a positive education requirement.<br /><br /><b>Basic Requirements: Degree: Operations Research; or at least 24 semester hours in a combination of operations research, mathematics, probability, statistics, mathematical logic, science, or subject-matter courses requiring substantial competence in college-level mathematics or statistics. At least 3 of the 24 semester hours must have been in calculus.</b><br /><br /><strong>Evaluation of Education: The primary requirement of operations research work is competence in the rigorous methods of scientific inquiry and analysis rather than in the subject matter of the problem. Therefore, applicants should have sufficient knowledge of applied mathematics to understand and use the fundamental concepts and techniques of operations research methods of analysis.
