The opportunity is intended to provide valuable work experience for students interested in a public service career. <strong>Applicants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate level program</strong>. The student will have an opportunity to improve his or her writing, research, analytical, logical, multi-tasking, and customer-service skills. Students are expected to work 20 hours per week during the school year and 40 hours per week (full-time) during the summer. Students will be appointed on a temporary basis with the duration to be determined based on the academic program. Upon graduation and successful completion of academic requirements, the AO may non-competitively convert a Co-op student to a permanent appointment.<br /><br />The position will serve in the Defender Services Office (DSO). The DSO administers the Federal appointed counsel program consisting of Federal public defenders; community defenders organizations and private panel attorneys. The Defender Services program operates pursuant to the Criminal Justice Act (CJA),18U.S.C.§3006A. The incumbent of this position will report to the Chief of the Administrative Operations Staff. The Administrative Operations Staff (AOS) provides administrative, logistical, financial and technical support for the Defender Services Office.<br /><br /><strong>This is a part-time position. Students are allowed to work up to 32 hours during the regular school year. Full time during the summer months, spring and fall breaks.</strong><br /><br />The duties of the position may include, but are not be limited to, the following<br /><br />1. Analyzing and applying travel policy for all travel and financial related duties;<br /> 2. Assisting the travel service liaison with travel related problems;<br /> 3. Processing, preparing and monitoring travel authorizations and vouchers for external travelers<br /> 4. Answering questions from internal and external travelers related to travel funding and policy;<br /> 5. Identifying and tracking problems related to internal and external travel and seeking solutions;<br /> 6. Reconciling invoices monthly; and<br /> 7. A background security reinvestigation or supplemental investigation may be required at a later time.</li> <li>You will be required to serve a trial period if selected for a first-time appointment to the Federal government, transferring from another Federal agency, or serving as a first-time supervisor. Failure to successfully complete the trial period may result in termination of employment.</li> <li>If appointed to a temporary position, management may have the discretion of converting the position to permanent depending upon funding and staffing allocation.</li> <li>Selectees must be currently enrolled in an accredited program.</li> <br /><br /><b>Qualifications</b><br /><br /><strong>Basic Qualification Requirements: </strong> Qualifications for AO Cooperative Education Program (Co-op) positions are closely related to the criteria established for executive branch positions by the Office of Personnel Management. Co-op positions are classified and paid under a broad-banded system. Salary is set commensurate with educational background and experience. Demonstrated relevant work experience will be credited. <ul> <li>Applicants must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a degree-seeking student in either an undergraduate or graduate level program.</li> <li>Applicants must have completed at least one year of undergraduate education beyond high school.</li> <li>Applicants must have a GPA of at least 3.0 <strong>(TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)</strong></li> <li>Applicants must be available to work year round in Washington, DC, and be able to stay for at least one year.</li> </ul> <strong>Additional Qualification Requirements:</strong> In addition to meeting the BASIC QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS, applicants must also: <ul> <li>Have the ability to work well in a team environment.</li> <li>Have very strong communication and reading skills and be detailed oriented.</li> <li>Have a working knowledge of computer applications such as Microsoft Excel, Word, or WordPerfect.</li> <li>Have excellent writing, reading and interpersonal skills, and be able to organize a variety of assignments simultaneously and meet tight deadlines.</li> </ul> <strong> Ideal candidate/Preferred not required : </strong>Students who are currently enrolled in an online degree program. <br /><br /><b>Education</b><br /><br /><strong>School Affiliation: </strong> All students in the Co-op program must be enrolled in an accredited school, and must be working toward a degree, diploma, certificate, etc. on a full or part-time basis. Students must maintain a minimum 3.0 G.P.A. You can receive credit for education received outside the United States if you provide evidence that it is comparable to an accredited educational institution in the United States.
