<b>Duties</b><br /><br /><b>Summary</b><br /><br />This position is in the Division of Textile Flammability and Electrical Engineering (LSE) in the Directorate for Laboratory Sciences (LS) in the Office of Hazard Identification and Reduction (EXHR) at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The Division is responsible for providing technical expertise, supporting hazard reduction projects, and conducting product safety assessments associated with textiles and materials flammability, electrical engineering, etc…<br /><br />Learn more about this agency <br /><br /><b>Responsibilities</b><br /><br />The CPSC is seeking recent graduates under the Pathways Program. This position is provided for recent graduates with a desire to work in the consumer product safety field and/or public sector and assignments are designed to complement the graduates educational field while meeting the expressed needs of the agency and CPSC organizations. <br /><br />The selected candidate will serve as a professional and technical expert in the area of textile science and technology, textile and related materials flammability, and fire safety as it relates to the range of fire hazards and performance requirements of textile-based consumer products. The selectee will report to the Division Director and is responsible for applying technical expertise to organize and complete a variety of assignments in the specialized technical area. The selectee organizes, plans, and conducts product evaluations, compliance assessments, and scientific analyses. He/she will establish, standardized tests on a range of textile products and applies analytical methods to measure, record, and interpret the results. Assignments typically involve different and unrelated methodologies and procedures. The selectee will participate in product teams and provide technical expertise to support larger products and solve problems assigned to a specific team. He/she recognizes and identifies unusual technical issues and refers complex problems to the Division Director or appointed Senior Staff member. You must have graduated within the past two years, from a qualifying educational institution or certificate program. The program duration is two years. Upon successful completion of the program and at the agency's discretion, the appointee may be converted to a permanent position in the competitive service. Appointee must sign a Participant Agreement. Recent Graduates will enter a formal training program with a mentor and execute an Individual Development Plan outlining training requirements and program expectations. The entire duration of the Recent Graduate Appointment constitutes a trial period.<br /><br />This is a Public Trust Position. Employment in this position requires a background investigation. Applicants must have a grade-point average of:<br /> <ul> <li>3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; OR</li> <li>3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.<br /><br />These honor societies are listed by the Association of College Honor Societies. </li> </ul> <br /><br /><b>Education</b><br /><br /><strong>Mandatory Education Requirement. </strong>All applicants must meet one of the following requirements to qualify:<br /><br /><strong>GS-07:</strong> Applicants must have 1 full year of graduate level education or undergraduate superior academic achievement. The area of study for undergraduate or graduate education must be in textile technology or have taken courses equivalent to a major in textile technology that included at least 20 semester hours in textile technology and closely related subjects such as textile science, materials science, fire science, electrical engineering, fire protection engineering, etc…<br /><br /><strong>GS-09:</strong> Applicants must have a Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B or J.D. The area of study for graduate education must be in textile technology or have taken courses equivalent to a major in textile technology that included at least 20 semester hours in textile technology and closely related subjects such as textile science, materials science, fire science, electrical engineering, fire protection engineering, etc…<br /><br />All applicants <strong>MUST</strong> submit a copy of their college transcripts with the degree conferred date.
