<b>Duties</b><br /><br /><b>Summary</b><br /><br />This position is located in the Safety Office, Engineering Service, Richmond Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) in the Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6) for Veterans Health Administration (VHA).<br /><br />Learn more about this agency <br /><br /><b>Responsibilities</b><br /><br />The primary duties of the Industrial Hygienist are to develop and implement a comprehensive and effective Industrial Hygiene program. Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: <ul> <li>Monitors programs, projects, operations, or activities to determine potential exposure and make recommendations to mitigate negative outcome.</li> <li>Evaluates, monitors, or ensures compliance with laws, regulations, policies, standards, or procedures.</li> <li>Explains or provides guidance on laws, regulations, policies, standards, or procedures to management, personnel, or clients.</li> <li>Integrates established Industrial Hygiene principles, concepts, and functions in support of related programs (i.e. asbestos control and abatement, ethylene oxide, formaldehyde, hearing conservation, hazard communication, nitrous oxide, mercury, hazardous and infectious waste management, water testing and treatment, respirator program and antineoplastic drugs).</li> <li>Performs inspections of existing control measures for effectiveness to include sampling methods involving such areas as chemicals, noise, heat, and other hazards.</li> <li>Directs corrective action from specific Industrial Hygiene inspections or surveys conducted to prevent or minimize health hazards within the work environment.</li> <li>Provides guidance, education, and awareness on important issues such as asbestos, lead, indoor air quality, toxic gases, and chemical usage.</li> </ul> <b>Work Schedule:</b> Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 4:30pm.<br /> <b>Recruitment & Relocation Incentives:</b> Authorized<br /> <b>Financial Disclosure Report:</b> Not Required<br /><br /><b>Travel Required</b><br /><br />Not required<br /><br />Supervisory status <br /> No <br /><br />Promotion Potential <br /> None <br /><br /></li> <b>Requirements</b><br /><br /><b>Conditions of Employment</b><br /><br /><ul> <li>You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job</li> <li>Subject to a background/security investigation</li> <li>Designated and/or random drug testing may be required</li> <li>Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959</li> <li>May be required to serve a probationary period</li> <li>Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process</li> </ul> <br /><br /><b>Qualifications</b><br /><br />This position includes a <b>Selective Placement Factor </b>(skill, knowledge, ability or other worker characteristic basic to – and essential for – satisfactory performance of the job). Applicants who do not meet it are ineligible for further consideration. <br /> <b>The Selective Placement Factor for this position is: </b>Industrial Hygienist experience within a hospital or healthcare setting.<br /><br /><b>BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: </b>Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:<br /> A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED);<br /><br /><b> OR </b><br /><br />A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED).<br /><br /><b> OR </b><br /><br />Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). (COPY OF CERTIFICATION REQUIRED)<br /><br /><b>SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE</b> – In addition to meeting the basic education requirement above, applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped them with the knowledge, skill and ability to successfully perform the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, this specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes: Developing, implementing and sustaining an Industrial Hygiene program by completing industrial hygiene surveys designed for the recognition, evaluation and control of occupational health hazards found; Experience in determining compliance with various established criteria, evaluating exposures, and advising on control measures; Experience advising on control measures and changes in work procedures or schedules to comply with established health requirements; Provides advice and direction on Industrial Hygiene matters to managers, supervisors and healthcare personnel; Recommending corrective measures such as engineering controls (ventilation, chemical fume hoods) or personal protective equipment (respirators) to eliminate or reduce occupational hazards; Experience accompanying occupational health inspections and providing technical assistance to the Employee Health. Note: All related experience must be documented on your resume to receive credit.<br /><br /><b> OR </b><br /><br /><b>SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE</b> (<b>TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED</b>): Applicants must possess successful completion of three (3) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. The education is qualifying if it provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the Industrial Hygienist position. Field inspections are frequent and require moderate physical exertion in carrying heavy equipment, climbing, and bending, as well as extended periods of standing and a considerable amount of walking during surveys. <br /><br /><strong>Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: </strong>Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.
