JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Develop and maintain high professional standards of journalism, ensuring delivery of high quality news programmes.
  • Establish the content and running order of the programme and lead others on the production of items through to transmission, including assigning, briefing and establishing priorities for operational and editorial teams.
  • Continue the development of the programme across social media and digital platforms, exploring the potential for expanding.
  • Responsible for building team spirit within permanent or temporary teams; ensuring the best use of individual skills. Encouraging team members to think about potential improvements.
  • Sets team and individual objectives, as well as clear expectations about required performance levels, rewards success and addresses performance issues promptly and fairly, treats team members with respect.
  • Seek ways to increase diversity in our workforce and to ensure that our output reflects the audiences we serve.
  • Assist in the development, commissioning and management of relevant business plans and manage individual programme budgets, ensuring value for money in use of resources.
  • To act as a facilitator of change, clearly communicating and distributing best practices between teams.
  • Foster an environment of productive employee relations, responding to and anticipating challenges from staff, unions and audiences.
  • Responsible for ensuring safe working practices and the observance of BBCs health and safety regulations, including completing hazard assessments.

ESSENTIAL

  • A professional journalist or a senior operational professional with extensive editorial experience of broadcast news and the ability to develop and implement new and innovative approaches to programme structure and content.
  • Proven editorial judgement, able to make sound decisions promptly .
  • A detailed understanding of current techniques and technology for newsgathering and production. An ability to use new technologies to create opportunities to enhance output and improve working practices.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of more than one team. Resolving conflicts as necessary.
  • Can identify a concept along with the plans which need to be implemented to meet the end goal. Evaluates situations, decisions, issues etc. in the short, medium and longer-term.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to improving diversity in the BBC and understands how individual differences can benefit the BBC.
  • Able to prioritise and plan activities taking into account all the relevant issues and factors such as deadlines, staffing, programme budgets and resource requirements.
  • Ability to write creatively in an engaging manner, adapt, produce and translate with accuracy, clarity and style appropriate to differing audiences and forms of media suitable for multimedia output.

CONTEXT

BBC World News is the BBCs most-watched television channel, with a global audience of 101 million adults per week. It is distributed by cable and satellite providers and streamed online in some markets. Some programmes are also distributed by partner stations e.g. the PBS network in the United States.

BBC World News produces two programmes from Washington.

  • Beyond 100 Days 2-3pm ET is co-presented from Washington and London and is broadcast globally on BBC World News and in the UK on the BBC News Channel and BBC4. At an extraordinary time of change and upheaval in the US and UK, 100 days (renamed Beyond 100 Days) was created to cover it all. With anchors on both sides of the Atlantic viewers are given the latest on the Trump administration and unfolding Brexit negotiations with top interviews and presenter analysis.
  • World News America 5-6pm ET is presented from Washington and brings viewers Emmy and Peabody award- winning coverage from around the globe. It is broadcast globally on BBC World News and has near universal carriage on PBS stations in the US. Targeted to an American audience, the programme features reports from journalists in the field and interviews with top officials. It takes an in-depth look at global events while tracking the latest in US politics. Using the reach of the BBC, the show broadcasts live from major events and provides coverage you wont find anywhere else in the US.

The Washington-based World News team is also responsible for planning coverage of US stories for the whole channel.

Work is underway to rebuild the Washington studio which is due to be finished in March 2020. The post-holder will be heavily involved in the refresh of the programmes using the new studio.

JOB PURPOSE

  • To provide strong and creative leadership to shape the agenda & coverage of BBC World News programmes broadcast from Washington and the whole channel.
  • To deliver the strongest treatments on the days main stories, and to develop longer term plans and coverage.
  • To line manage the World News production team based in Washington and work closely with World News colleagues in London and Singapore.
  • To work with Newsgathering, Online and other content providers including Current Affairs to deliver a diverse and dynamic story agenda, and to showcase the best of the BBCs journalism and analysis.
  • To be the main editorial point of contact for WETA (our PBS partner).
  • In conjunction with the Head of News, BBC World News, to work with colleagues in BBC Global News (the commercial subsidiary which operates BBC World News and bbc.com) e.g. for marketing purposes.
  • To ensure the programmes use imaginative and challenging treatments of key stories and events.
  • To ensure the programmes succeed in appealing to our target audiences.
  • To take difficult editorial and logistical decisions quickly, and to brief producers, directors and presenters clearly and concisely.
  • To build an open, collaborative and diverse culture to generate innovative and distinctive output.
  • As a member of the Washington bureau and World News management teams to work collaboratively with colleagues.
  • SKILLS

  • Evidence of strong editorial leadership in shaping daily coverage of major stories in video.
  • Proven editorial judgement and flair, able to make sound decisions quickly.
  • Proven writing ability (in flawless English) and high standard of TV/video production skills based on substantial journalism experience.
  • Good knowledge of US and international news and current affairs.
  • Experience of leading a team under pressure and delivering to deadline.
  • Demonstrable understanding of shifting viewing habits.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to improving diversity in the BBC and understands how individual differences can benefit the BBC.
